Choosing a medical assistant program is a significant first step to a fantastic career that you will glean considerable information from and be able to gain and improve on outstanding skills that you can use in this career and throughout life. There are fantastic skills and duties that you will learn and put into action while in our program. These skills and responsibilities are essential to those looking to be in the medical assistant field. You will be able to implement these skills and duties in your everyday life, and we want you to know what they are and why they are essential and valuable to you.

As a medical assistant, you will have a lot of interaction with patients; in most instances, you will be the first person they have contacta  within a healthcare facility. The following skills are essential for you and will be things that you will use throughout your career.

Essential Medical Assistant Skills & Duties

  1. Interpersonal Skills: As a medical assistant, you will have to interact with people from many backgrounds while carrying out your job duties. From patients to doctors, nurses and other medical staff, interpersonal skills will aid you in all interactions within this setting.
  2. Administrative Skills: As a medical assistant, you may be needed in a variety of areas. There may be a need for you to perform duties in the administrative field; those may include processing insurance forms, identifying suppliers that are used, placing supply orders and inputting test result data. As a medical assistant, you need to know how to perform these duties.
  3. Office Skills: It may seem like office skills are an easy feat, but it takes a lot of talent to do so effortlessly. Being able to bill clients, answer phones and service customers are a few of the office skills that you will need as a medical assistant. There are times when these duties are required.
  4. Communication Skills: Communication is key to your career as a medical assistant. Being able to inform a patient about a procedure or put medical terminology into layman’s terms is a skill you should have. Effective communication can be a relief to patients and bring outstanding professionalism to the forefront of the healthcare facility.
  5. Medical Skills: These are the core competencies of what you should have as a medical assistant. In this area, you will need to perform procedures such as drawing blood, maintaining medical equipment, administering injections, administering medication, dressing wounds,  and, prepping the exam rooms, along with a host of other essential duties.
  6. Multitasking Skills: There are a lot of things you will have to do as a medical assistant. One second you can be working on one task; the next, you can be moved to something different. Being able to move between tasks with no issues is extremely important.
  7. Confidentiality & Integrity: You will have access to a lot of information on patients and their personal lives. It is important to keep all medical information confidential.
  8. Attention to Detail: Keenness is required as a medical assistant. It is of high importance that you pay attention to details. You don’t want to make an error of any kind when you are in this field.
