How Long Does It Take to Become a Dental Assistant?

For those considering a career as a dental assistant, there’s some important information to consider. Dental assistant jobs are ideal for individuals with strong organizational skills and those who want to make a positive impact on the lives of patients. Depending on where you live, the length of time may vary to become a dental assistant. Some states require no formal education while others require you to complete a dental assistant program from an accredited school and pass an exam. This guide provides information on what a dental assistant is, the requirements needed and details on how the Institute of Medical and Business Careers can help.

What Does a Dental Assistant Do?

Dental assistants have multiple responsibilities throughout the dental office, including preparing patients for procedures performed by the dentist. The exact roles may vary from one location to another. Typically, dental assistants play an important role in improving the overall patient experience and performing tasks that will enhance the efficiency of the practice. Duties may include:

  • Greet patients when they arrive and set up treatment rooms
  • Chart patients’ health conditions and maintain treatment notes
  • Perform any clinical procedures as instructed by the dentist
  • Maintain procedure rooms
  • Monitor inventory of dental supplies
  • Provide patients with aftercare instructions
  • Ensure secure handling of patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations

What Are the Requirements to Be a Dental Assistant?

State requirements for dental assistants vary depending on where you live. Still, most states require at least a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited dental assistant program. These programs usually take 9 to 12 months. Some states also require candidates to pass a certification exam, such as the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exam.

In addition to formal education, dental assistants should possess specific skills, including excellent communication, attention to detail, computer skills and the ability to work under pressure. You may also need to pass a CPR class.

How Can I Become a Dental Assistant?

If you’re interested in becoming a dental assistant, start by obtaining your high school diploma or high school GED. Next, enroll in an accredited dental assistant program, like the one at the Institute of Medical and Business Careers. While in school, you may consider interning for a local dental office, which will give you work experience and integrate with your degree program. IMBC’s dental assisting program includes an internship for every student.

Check with your state’s dental board to determine the specific requirements for a dental assistant and pass a board exam if required. There are additional certifications available to help you further your career.

If you’re ready to begin a career as a dental assistant and are interested in dental assistant jobs, enroll in the dental assistant training program at IMBC. It can be completed in about one year, and at the end of the program you’ll be prepared to pursue the Nationally Registered Dental Assistant (NRDA) credential and take the Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam, administered by the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) and Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) respectively.
