The Program
Medical records technicians (MRTs), are responsible for managing medical records of all types, including x-rays, blood work and lab results. They assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS and PCS codes to each diagnosis and procedure that indicate costs and facilitate collecting payments for hospitals, clinics, physicians and nursing homes.
Because they are computer-based, our medical technician training includes work with the software you’ll be using daily. You’ll learn to prepare, maintain and secure medical records, as well as understand and use medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
While taking medical records technician courses online, you’ll be required to take part in a practicum which will provide real-world experience under professional guidance.
Upon successfully completing your medical technologist training, you’ll be eligible to sit for medical records certification. There are two optional certifications available:
- The Nationally Registered Certified Coding Specialist (NRCCS), administered by the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
- The Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS), administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
For online students, the cost of the certification exams is paid for by IMBC when the student qualifies and meets the IMBC guidelines. Certification is not required for employment, but by validating your competencies, IMBC believes you will have a competitive advantage over non-certified job seekers.
