Medical assistant technicians perform many job duties to keep the offices of doctors, medical centers, and clinics running smoothly. Depending on their employer’s needs, they may perform clerical, administrative, or clinical job duties, or all three. The job description of a medical assistant also varies by office type, location, and the size of the practice.

Medical assistant technicians are key members of any hospitals, clinics and health care foundations. The job description for medical assistant technicians (MATs) involve a wide range of tasks including administrative, front office and clinical. MATs are also entitled to provide assistance to the doctor, while performing general checkups and giving necessary information to visitors and patients, regarding the operational procedures of the hospital. There is high demand for medical assisting technician’s jobs because of the increase in number of patients and the need for prompt and better medical service.
An important part of the medical office assistant’s job is to handle the front desk of a physician’s office or clinic to include registration, filing and maintenance of medical records and documents, maintaining financial records and performing accounting tasks, processing medical insurance claims, medical billing and electronic claims. In addition to administrative duties, a medical assistant technician is also responsible for clinical activities such as drawing blood, applying and changing dressings, collecting urine samples and for diagnosis, administering EKGs, preparing patients for examinations, taking medical histories, assisting the physician during examinations, explaining medical procedures to patients, calling in prescriptions to pharmacies, collect laboratory specimens, sterilize medical instruments.

 

The IMBC Medical Assisting Technician program has several advantages. The Associate in Specialized Technology (A.S.T.) Degree gives graduates a higher credential, making them more marketable to employers. The degree program also allows students to take 3 industry certifications exams, the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA,) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT,) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR.) In addition to the degree, students may complete requirements for a Phlebotomy minor.
In the US, physicians and hospitals rely heavily on the skills of medical assistant technicians to keep accurate and comprehensive records. Truly, they are a vital part of the health care team. Employment for all medical assistant technicians is expected to grow 29% from 2012-2022, per the BLS. The rising growth rate is due in part to advances in the medical field, but also the aging of the general population.
