5 Amazing Programs to Start Your Healthcare Training Off Right

Have you dreamed about finding a job where you feel needed every day by others? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the world is in need of about 4.3 million more healthcare workers! This could be you!

There are many positions within the healthcare field, so do not be afraid if you don’t see yourself as the typical healthcare worker. Whether you are great at customer support, love working with computers, or are considered empathetic, there is a healthcare training program out there for you.

We will walk you through five of these programs and what they entail. Let’s get started!

1. Medical Office Administrator

If you consider yourself a ‘people person,’ an administrator career might be right for you. In total, the program will take about nine months, and can be completed in-person at a campus, online, or “hybrid” (meaning some in-person and some online.) According to the U.S. Bureau o Labor Statistics, approximately 96,400 jobs are expected to become available in this field between 2018 and 2028.

To be an excellent medical office administrator, you will need a combination of customer service skills, data entry skills, and organizational know-how.

The good news is you may have picked up many of these abilities already in your day-to-day life! If so, all you need is an accredited school offering the right training to get you job-ready.

Like all the other positions on this list that follow, the duration of the training program starts with the time it takes to complete your classes. In addition, it also includes time for other learning periods, like internships.

2. Medical Billing and Coding

For the detail-oriented folks out there, billing and coding might be right up your alley. Getting the right training for this position will leave you with some crucial skills that may put you in an excellent position for the job market.

The medical billing and coding training at IMBC takes about a year to complete for the typical student and includes training on specialized processes and procedures regarding the billing, invoicing, and insurance reimbursement aspects of the healthcare industry. You’ll learn about how to properly bill both insurance companies and patients so that healthcare providers get paid timely and accurately. You’ll learn how to handle medical records safely and securely so that you protect patient privacy and ensure the accuracy of care.

This program also includes preparation for the industry certification exam which may make you more attractive as an employee to a potential employer.

3. Medical Assisting Training with Phlebotomy

You might be wondering what phlebotomy is, but you’ve probably undergone it at least once or twice in your life. If you’ve ever gotten your blood drawn for a blood test, you’ve seen phlebotomy up close.

This job is the most hands-on position in this list. Being a medical assistant means you may have to check vital signs and perform diagnostic tests. The training takes a little over a year, and it’s an even faster-growing job than medical administration.

If you’d like to train to be a medical assistant, you should be prepared to interact with patients as they go through unpleasant procedures. Some patients won’t mind the experience at all, but you’ll encounter a variety of emotions, ranging from discomfort to anxiety and fear.

This training is great for people who are empathetic, steady, and confident.

4. Medical Records Technician

If you would like to go for a job that takes a little longer to complete but gives you a specialized degree, a medical records technician program might be right for you. You can do the medical records training online or in person, and it takes about a year and a half to complete, primarily because it involves general education courses like English and sociology.

The medical records technician program takes longer to complete than the other training programs on this list, but you’ll end up with an Associate in Specialized Technology (A.S.T) degree. This, like the coding specialist certification, may give you an edge when you’re searching for jobs.

As a medical records technician-in-training, you’ll learn how to use the software used for electronic healthcare records (EHR). You’ll also have the opportunity to earn the NRCCS, the Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) certificate, and also the CPR certification if you’re on campus.

5. Dental Assisting

When you are looking into training programs for the healthcare field, don’t forget dentistry!

dental assistant program can be a great option for anyone who can multitask and loves working with people. Training in this program at IMBC takes about a year and is available only at our Pittsburgh dental assisting school.

Like medical assisting, dental assisting requires a lot of empathy and patience. You may find that it’s a little more predictable than medical assisting and then you have a higher ability to plan for your appointments well in advance.
